Acne & Depression
There’s a study from the British Journal of Dermatology that’s been resurfaced, confirming the link between depression and those who suffers from acne.
As someone who has battled with this skin disease all her life, this doesn’t come as news.
When society dictates that self-worth equates beauty, intelligence, and wealth in that order; is it any surprise that low self-esteem and depression follows?
This is especially prevalent in one’s teenage years, where you’re only starting to build your identity. And when your sense of self is tied to this imperfection very early on, it carries on throughout your life.
I think it’s very important, more than just addressing the actual skin disease itself, is to be able to talk about the debilitating effect this has on the psyche.
Mental health is getting some spotlight in the UK for both young and old people. It’s great that they are recognizing the illness as it is and addressing it very publicly. Most importantly, they’re doing something about.
The US however, seems to be going at this backwards. The recent shooting in Florida is more than just a symptom of a disease, it is a destructive syndrome that was allowed to fester in an individual.
I hope someday people can remove the stigma of talking about things like depression and mental illness, and everything associated with the disease. The only way we can address a problem is by identifying it first, but how can we do that if just talking about it is taboo?
